Why people stay in Kajiado
Kajiado town sits 80 km south of Nairobi on the A104 Namanga road, but the name here really means the county: a vast wedge of Maasai rangeland running from the Ngong Hills on Nairobi's western edge down through Kitengela, Isinya and Bissil to the Tanzanian border at Namanga, and southeast to Amboseli under Kilimanjaro. Almost nobody comes to sleep in Kajiado town itself. People come for what the county holds — the ridge walk on Ngong, the prehistoric site at Olorgesailie, the pink soda flats of Lake Magadi, and the long road to Amboseli.
The landscape changes fast as you drop off the Nairobi plateau. Within 40 km the greenery gives out and you are in flat acacia scrub with dust devils, camels along the roadside and Maasai bomas behind thorn fences. Kajiado town itself is a linear highway settlement — a market, a bus stage, hardware shops, a livestock auction that is worth an hour if you hit the right morning. Rooms in town are KSh1,800 to KSh4,000 and basic. The proper accommodation is in the Ngong and Kitengela corner near Nairobi, and in the tented camps at the Amboseli end.
Two honest warnings. Ngong Hills is one of the best half-day walks near any African capital — a 12 km ridge line with the Rift Valley falling away west and Nairobi laid out east — and it has a real history of robberies on the quieter middle section. Hire a Kenya Forest Service ranger at the gate; it costs a couple of thousand shillings and it removes the problem entirely. And Amboseli is 240 km from Nairobi through Kajiado, four to five hours each way — it is not a day trip no matter what a tout on Moi Avenue tells you.
Evenings out here are dark and quiet, with stars you will not see anywhere near the city and a temperature drop that surprises people who packed for hot plains. Kajiado suits travellers who want landscape and space, are happy in a car, and want to understand the country immediately south of Nairobi rather than fly over it. It does not suit anyone without transport, and it has no restaurant scene, no nightlife, and no shopping worth the drive.
For most visitors the sensible base in this county is the Ngong and Kitengela end nearest Nairobi, where guesthouses and small country lodges charge KSh4,000 to KSh9,000 with breakfast, secure parking and easy access to the ridge and the Magadi road. Kajiado town itself has only basic lodgings at KSh1,800 to KSh4,000 — clean enough, but built for traders rather than travellers, and loud from the highway. At the far south, the tented camps around Amboseli run KSh18,000 to KSh60,000 full board with game drives, which is a different trip entirely and needs at least two nights to justify the drive. Avoid anything advertised as Amboseli that is actually 60 km from the park gate. Check water supply everywhere; this is semi-arid country and boreholes matter more than star ratings.
Things to do in Kajiado
Ngong Hills Forest Station, above Ngong town about 45 minutes from central Nairobi. A 12 km ridge of seven knuckles with the Rift Valley dropping west and the city spread east. Entry is a few hundred shillings; hire a KFS ranger for around KSh1,500 to KSh2,500, which is standard practice and solves the security question. Allow four to five hours.
About 65 km southwest of Nairobi down the Magadi road, in Kajiado county. A prehistoric site excavated by Mary and Louis Leakey where Acheulean hand axes lie exactly where they were dropped hundreds of thousands of years ago, under shelters. Entry is a few hundred shillings for citizens and around KSh1,000 to KSh1,500 for non-residents. Guides on site are excellent.
110 km southwest of Nairobi at the end of the Magadi road, dropping to 600 metres — the hottest, lowest place within easy reach of the city. A soda lake of pink and white crusts with flamingos, a working soda ash plant and natural hot springs at the southern end. Go in the morning; by 13:00 it is brutally hot and the light flattens.
Kajiado town and Bissil, further down the A104, both hold cattle and goat auctions on set market days — ask locally, they shift. Hundreds of animals, serious money changing hands, and no tourist infrastructure at all. Arrive by 08:00, dress plainly, ask before photographing anyone, and buy tea from one of the stalls rather than hovering.
Amboseli National Park sits at the southern tip of Kajiado county, 240 km from Nairobi via Namanga or Emali — four to five hours. Big elephant herds against Kilimanjaro, best photographed at 06:30 before the mountain clouds over. Non-resident entry runs around KSh8,000 a day. Stay two nights minimum; a day trip is a waste of a long drive.
Off the Magadi road past Ngong, on the escarpment above Nairobi National Park. A glassblowing workshop and studio recycling bottles into glassware and mosaics, with rope bridges, sculpture and a café over the gorge. Open most days; the studio is best visited on a weekday morning when the furnaces are running. Pieces run KSh1,500 upwards.

Getting around Kajiado
Kajiado town is 80 km from Nairobi on the A104 Namanga highway via Athi River, Kitengela and Isinya — about 90 minutes by car. Namanga-bound matatus and shuttles leave Nairobi from the Railways and Accra Road stages for KSh400 to KSh700, running from around 05:30 to 19:00. For Ngong Hills, matatus from the city centre to Ngong town cost KSh100 to KSh150 and take 45 to 70 minutes, then a boda to the forest gate for KSh200. There is effectively no public transport to Olorgesailie, Magadi or Amboseli — hire a car with driver for KSh10,000 to KSh15,000 a day, more for the Amboseli run.
Questions about Kajiado
It is safe with a ranger and has a real history of muggings without one, particularly on the quiet middle section between the second and fifth peaks. The Kenya Forest Service rangers at the gate charge roughly KSh1,500 to KSh2,500 for a group and walk the whole ridge with you. Every regular hiker takes one. Weekends are busier and therefore safer than weekdays.
No, and you should refuse anyone who sells it as one. It is 240 km each way through Kajiado county, four to five hours in either direction, which leaves you two hours in the park in flat midday light with Kilimanjaro fully hidden by cloud. Two nights is the minimum that makes sense — the mountain shows itself around 06:30 and again at dusk.
It is one of the richest Acheulean hand axe sites in the world, excavated by Mary and Louis Leakey from 1943 onwards, with stone tools and fossil bones left in situ under open shelters. The site guides explain the lake-basin geology properly and the visit takes about an hour. It sits 65 km down the Magadi road with almost no facilities — carry water and fuel.
For the Magadi road, Olorgesailie and the Ngong approach, a normal car is fine — the tarmac is decent, though corrugated in patches. For Amboseli, the park tracks and the Emali or Namanga approach roads, four-wheel drive with high clearance is the right choice, especially between March and May. Fuel stations are sparse south of Isinya; fill up before you leave the highway.
